What Can a Licensed Gas Fitter Actually Do?

Gas fitting sits under its own licence, apart from water plumbing, and each job finishes with a pressure test and a compliance certificate. Our gas fitters handle:

  • Connections for cooktops, wall ovens, BBQs and pool heaters, lit and checked before we leave
  • New lines and extensions, whether a single extra bayonet or a complete new run
  • Leak tracing and repair, using gas detectors to find the fault
  • Compliance checks on existing installations, including lines that have been in the ground for decades
  • Gas connections for hot water systems, paired with the hot water work

How Do You Know a Line Needs Work?

A gas line in trouble tends to show it. Watch for:

  • Burners that light lazily, lift off the ring or leave soot on pans
  • A rotten-egg odour in a cupboard, the laundry or under the house
  • Pilot lights that will not stay on
  • A heater or oven that cuts out partway through a cycle
  • Gas usage climbing while the household's habits stay the same

Any one of these is worth a check. A detector run and a pressure test show whether there is a fault, where it is and what the repair involves.

Lines run or repaired, appliances connected and the whole system pressure tested before anything is signed off.

What Feeds Into the Quote?

Four things set a gas price:

  • The length of new pipe needed to reach the appliance
  • Whether the pipe goes under a raised floor, through a brick wall or into a finished kitchen
  • Whether the old line holds pressure or a section has to be renewed first
  • A gas smell at night or on a weekend, which is attended at the after-hours rate

Gas Lines Across Three Eras of Housing

Each wave of housing carries gas its own way

Bellbird has pre-1940 miners' cottages, weatherboard and fibro homes built from the 1960s to the 1980s, and brick-veneer houses added as Cessnock spreads toward the village.

Older homes gained gas piece by piece

One owner added a heater point, another a cooktop, so a single line can carry joints from several decades, and a pressure test is what finds the one that leaks.

Newer homes were piped in one go

Their gas points went in during the build and are easy to reach, so connecting an appliance there is simpler. Doing it in a cottage with a tight crawl space under the floor takes more labour.

When the Job Belongs to Someone Else

When we're not the right call. If the gas meter itself is leaking, or the fault is in the service pipe out in the road, the gas network handles it and their emergency line comes first. Everything from the meter outlet into the house is ours.

Questions Before the Gas Work Starts

Is a licensed gas fitter legally required to connect a cooktop in Bellbird?

Yes. NSW treats every gas connection as licensed work, whether it is a single cooktop or a new outdoor BBQ bayonet. The fitter tests the line, lights the appliance and issues a compliance certificate, which a handyperson cannot do.

Can an older cottage on the village streets get a new gas point?

Yes, once the old pipe proves sound. We pressure test the existing line first, since decades of service can leave a joint that no longer holds. Any section that drops pressure is renewed before the new appliance is connected.

What do I do if I can smell gas inside the house?

Leave every switch and plug as it is, put out any flame, open doors and windows on your way and get outside. Call the gas network's emergency line from the street, day or night. After they make the supply safe, we track down and repair the fault inside the property.

Do you install gas hot water systems here?

Yes. Gas tank units and instantaneous heaters are both fitted, with our gas fitters running the supply and testing it before the unit is lit. Whether to repair or replace an old heater, and how gas stacks up against other systems, is covered in hot water options.
