Why Do Drains Block Here?

In the older part of the village, three causes stack on top of each other.

Earthenware with tired joints

Salt-glazed clay sewer from the mining era still serves many original homes, and the seal at each joint has long since perished.

Roots through the gaps

Mature gardens send fine roots into those perished joints, and the first pass of the cutter can bring out a thick mat of them.

Moving clay

The reactive soil expands when wet and contracts when dry, shifting buried pipe sections until a lip forms and waste catches on it.

Newer brick-veneer homes fail in their own way. A crushed stormwater bend from the build or a leaking hose can look like a blockage until the camera shows the real fault.

How a Clear Runs

The method stays the same for clay, PVC or cast iron.

  1. 1

    Look before clearing

A CCTV camera is pushed along the pipe to locate the blockage, identify the pipe material and spot any breaks.

  2. 2

    Pick the tool

The jetter scours grease and roots off the pipe wall, while the eel cuts through tougher obstructions in brittle old pipe.

  3. 3

    Film the result

With water flowing again, the camera makes a second trip so you can see the clear pipe for yourself.

On earthenware, that second look matters. A pipe that runs now can still have a cracked length that will catch waste again, and the footage shows it before it does.

What Shapes the Price of a Clear?

"We talked through the options of our blocked kitchen sink drain (not just an s bend problem) and came to the perfect long term solution at a reasonable price." Debbie

The price for clearing a drain rests on:

  • Where the opening is A clear through an outside inspection point is quicker than working from inside a cottage with no access point.
  • What is blocking it Soft grease jets out fast; a root mass in brittle clay needs slower, careful cutting.
  • Length of line A blockage near the boundary means more pipe to clear and film than one by the house.
  • Callout timing A Sunday night overflow is charged at the out-of-hours rate, shown in the price before we start.

Clay, Roots and Storm Water

Clay shifts the pipes slowly

The reactive clay under the pre-1940 weatherboard cottages heaves in wet winters and shrinks in dry spells, and over the years that pulls old earthenware sections apart at the joints.

Roots take the opening

In gardens planted generations ago, roots find those opened joints and grow into the sewer, and the camera shows exactly which joints they have entered.

Storms test the stormwater

Bellbird sits on undulating ground above Cessnock, and runoff from a summer downpour rushes toward the lowest yards. A stormwater pipe already part full of silt cannot take that surge, and the water backs up against the house.

When We're Not the Right Call

If the camera finds the choke in the shared sewer main outside your property, Hunter Water clears it. We show you the footage and give you their faults number, and there is nothing for us to charge on that part.

Blocked Drain Questions From the Village

How do I tell a blocked sewer from blocked stormwater?

A sewer problem shows indoors: a toilet that rises before it drains, gurgling from the shower, a smell from the floor grate. A stormwater problem shows outdoors: gutters and downpipes spilling over and puddles against the footings in rain. An old cottage can have both at once, so the camera confirms the culprit before clearing starts.

Do you clear blocked drains with chemicals?

No. Drain chemicals only loosen part of a blockage and can eat into old earthenware and galvanised pipe. We clear lines mechanically with a water jetter or an electric eel, then film the pipe so the result is on record.

Can tree roots be stopped from coming back?

A clear removes the roots in the line, but roots return to any joint that still has a gap. Where the camera shows cracked or shifted earthenware, relining seals the line from within and leaves the garden alone, which is the lasting fix for root entry on the old village runs.

Is the camera check part of the clear?

Yes. One camera pass locates the blockage and a second confirms the pipe is running, and both sit inside the price you approve. We talk you through the footage on screen, so you see the cause and the finished result yourself.
