Plumbing ute parked on a residential street

An Estate With a Century of Pipe

The grid itself

The Crossing Estate subdivision of 1923 laid out this grid, and it was gazetted as a suburb in its own right in 1971. At the last census this small hillside held 305 dwellings, 95.1 per cent of them separate houses, most of them modest weatherboard, fibro or brick-veneer homes.

What that means underground

Sewage from houses built between the wars and after 1945 still flows through earthenware put in when the estate was new, and the reactive clay keeps shifting those joints until roots and wipes catch. Original weatherboard and fibro houses can still be on galvanised water pipe, which rusts from inside until it splits.

The fall

The blocks fall away below Wollombi Road, sending roof and yard water toward the house below unless it is piped across the slope. The grid drains toward Limestone Creek, but the problems here are runoff on the hillside and old pipe, not creek water reaching homes.

What a Visit From This Team Covers

The Heights shares a boundary with the village, so it sits on the same loop:

Plumber collecting gear from the ute toolbox

Emergency plumbing

When a rusted line inside a wall cavity lets go without much warning, or a blocked clay main surges back up a downhill gully once storm debris packs the line

Plumber feeding a drain camera into a pit at a commercial unit

Blocked drains

When shifted earthenware joints catch roots and wipes, or when a downhill run silts up at its lowest bend and chokes in wet weather

Plumber finishing a continuous-flow gas hot water install

Hot water

When an old tank tucked beside an original cottage dies during a frosty spell, with 8.2 frost days in an average year

Gas fitter checking an oven connection

Gas fitting

When an older cottage needs a new cooktop point and its original gas line has to pass a pressure test first

The figure is set down on paper ahead of the job, and nothing begins until you approve it.

Questions From the Heights

Do the old earthenware sewers here need replacing?

Not always. Roots caught at a worn joint come out with a clear, and a camera run shows whether the line is otherwise sound. A dropped joint or a cracked section is different, and that is when a patch, a reline or a new section gets priced as a fixed figure before anyone digs.

Can stormwater running down the hill be fixed?

Yes. Runoff from the roof and the ground gets carried across the slope to the street or a lawful discharge point so it stops banking against the slab below. If water is arriving from a neighbouring property rather than your own pipes, the owners sort that between themselves, and we quote only the work inside your boundary.
