How Do You Know a Line Needs Jetting?

A line that is filling up gives signs around the house:

  • The kitchen sink taking longer to empty as fat coats the pipe
  • The pan bubbling while the laundry tub empties
  • Shower water pooling round your feet before it drains
  • A sewer smell at an outside grate that comes and goes with the weather

Any of these means the pipe is narrowing. Jetting scrubs the full inside of the pipe, not just the first plug it hits.

Why Water Beats a Blade on Village Pipes

We carry an electric eel too, and it has its uses. On a root-choked line, though, the eel's blade only opens a gap down the centre and leaves loose roots behind to snag the next flush.

Jetting scours the pipe wall as it goes. Jets angled backwards pull the hose up the line and scrub all the way round the inside, and the returning water flushes the cut pieces back to the opening. On old clay with open joints, that matters, because debris left in the pipe settles at the next joint and builds up again.

How the Jetting Job Runs

Each jetting job goes like this:

  1. 01

    Open the line

The plumber lifts a grate or opens an inspection riser to get the hose in.

  2. 02

    Look first

A short camera run identifies the blockage and its position, which sets the nozzle and pressure for your pipe.

  3. 03

    Jet the line

Pressurised water breaks up roots or fat, and the debris washes back to the opening, where we lift it out.

  4. 04

    Film the clean pipe

A second camera run shows the line running clear, and you watch it on the screen.

Both camera runs are included in the price, not added on.

What Shapes the Cost of a Jetting Clear?

Four things set the jetting price:

  • The blockage Soft fat washes out quickly, while a thick root mat in clay takes more passes.
  • Length of line A sewer that runs from the back of the block out to the front needs more hose than a short branch.
  • Access Working from inside a cramped subfloor, or through a deep riser, adds time.
  • Time of the call An overflow on a weeknight or weekend is charged at the night rate, confirmed with you first.

We provide up-front, honest quotes that will always match the final price, should you decide to go ahead.

Clay, Roots and the Jetter

Old pipe in moving ground

Sewage from the pre-1940 cottages still drains along glazed clay pipe put down in the mining decades, and the reactive clay beneath the district pushes those joints out of line each wet winter. Mature gardens then send roots into the opened joints.

Why jetting suits it

A jetter strips the root mat off the pipe wall rather than piercing it, which gives the old line its best chance of staying clear. If the footage shows pipe too broken to clear, pipe relining seals it, and heavy root growth is handled through tree root removal.

What Customers Say

We talked through the options of our blocked kitchen sink drain (not just an s bend problem) and came to the perfect long term solution at a reasonable price.

When We're Not the Right Call

If the camera shows the blockage sits in Hunter Water's sewer main beyond your property, their crew jets that line, and we pass you the footage and their contact. A pipe that has caved in cannot be jetted clear, so we price a repair. Rainwater problems belong on the stormwater drain repairs page instead.

Questions Before You Book

Will jetting damage old earthenware drains in Bellbird?

Not when the jetter is set up for the pipe. Salt-glazed clay from the colliery years copes with a controlled run at the right pressure. If the first camera pass shows a cracked or caved-in length, we stop and talk repairs, since a broken pipe cannot be washed back into shape.

Is jetting better than an electric eel for my drain?

For grease, silt and fine roots, jetting has the edge, since it scrubs the pipe wall and carries the loose material out. The eel earns its place on a hard obstruction or a thick root ball, and some lines get both, one after the other.

Do you use chemicals to clear drains in Bellbird?

No. Jetting is purely mechanical, with water under pressure doing the cutting and the flushing. Caustic cleaners can attack old pipe joints and leave the real cause in place, so we stick to the jetter and the eel and film the pipe afterwards.

How often does a village drain need jetting?

A sound pipe with tight joints can go a long time between clears. Where roots have found a way in or a joint has dropped, material builds up again sooner, and your clear's footage tells you which applies.

Every other drain job, from a blocked sewer clear to a drain camera inspection, is listed under blocked drains.
